Gambling Consultation Taskforce
The Department of Broadband, Communications, and the Digital Economy (the Department) will undertake a review of the Interactive Gambling Act 2001 (Cth). In conducting the Review, the Department will consult with key stakeholders as well as the wider Australian community. On 24 August 2011, the Department published a Call for Submissions. The Department expects to commence consultancies in the second half of 2011 and to submit its report to the Minster in the first half of 2012.
In its capacity as the national body for the internet industry in Australia, the IIA will get involved in this consultation process. The Act in its current form requires members of our industry to cooperate. However, there is potential for these obligations to increase significantly and to impose responsibility upon ISPs.
IIA member and expert in this field Jamie Nettleton, Partner, Addisons Lawyers has chaired an IIA Gambling Consultation taskforce to prepare a submission from the IIA. Further information on the review can be found here.
The IIA submission can be viewed here.
